Teen & Adult Acne

Acne Vulgaris is one of the most common dermatological conditions we see in our family and medical aesthetic practice. It affects mostly teenagers and young adults of all skin types and colors. Most of us can expect to have it at some time in our life. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t have clear skin.

Let’s explore together to have a better understanding as to what is acne and how to best treat it.

Education

There is a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding regarding acne, it’s impact on the individual and how to have clearer complexion. Margaret L. Larson ARNP, MSN, FNP-C suspects most people experiencing acne have done their internet research and tried diet, over the counter products and treatments and still have acne breakouts or even caused harm to their skin.

Margaret Larson located in Bellevue & Burien, has a passion to help others optimize their health in a holistic manner which includes their skin health. She has compassion for acne suffers as she understands from experience and clinical studies acne can come with an emotional cost. These emotional costs include low self-esteem, depression, social isolation and may increase a teens risk of suicide. Knowledge is powerful and empowers one to turn a hopeless sense of self into hope, purpose and action. We are here to help you with your Acne in the Greater Seattle Area.

What is Acne?

Let’s break it down…What is acne?

Acne come is different forms such as blackheads, pimples and bumps on the face, chest and back (in dense areas of follicles) caused by inflamed skin and or plugged hair follicles and sebaceous glands with oil and dead skin cells. There are non-inflammatory open and closed comedomes and inflamed papules, pustules and nodules. You can have one type or a mixture.

If there is an underlying medical condition contributing such as a hormone imbalance, polycystic ovarian syndrome or androgen disorder these would be further evaluated and medication treatment considered. For severe pustular acne we would consider a referral to a dermatologist for consideration of treatment with a medication called isotretinoin. For the purpose of this blog we’re getting down to basics and keeping it simple.

There are four main contributing factors to acne which include the following:

  1. Excessive production of skin cells that plug the follicles
  2. Excessive sebum production
  3. Inflammation of the follicle
  4. Presence of bacteria
Treatment Plan

Let’s break it down… Address the four main contributing factors with a basic treatment plan with following 4 steps:

  1. Cleanse and exfoliate dead skin plugging the hair follicles.
  2. Reduce sebum production and irritants.
  3. Reduce inflammation of the follicle.
  4. Reduce or illuminate bacteria with an oral antibiotic.
